   At the Scientific Council of Tashkent State University<\/strong> held on May 25, 1989,<\/strong> a decision was made to establish the Department of \u201cSociology\u201d and the Sociological Center on the basis of the Faculty of Philosophy and Economics. To ensure the implementation of this decision, on August 27 of the year<\/strong>, a seven-point order of the rector Sh.A.Alimov was signed on the activities of the department. In the third paragraph of the document, the vice-rector of the university for scientific affairs, candidate of economic sciences, associate professor S.I. Nikolayev was assigned the temporary performance of the duties of the head of the department.
\nThe first appointed head of the department, candidate of philosophical sciences, associate professor S.I.Nikolaev, worked until the end of 1992. The second head of the department was candidate of technical sciences, associate professor A.Khaydarov<\/strong>, who worked until June 1994. Since 1994, the department and the Center for Sociological Research have been headed by doctor of economic sciences, professor N.S.Alikariev. After him, the department was headed by B.A.Farfiev, M.Kh.Ganieva, N.M.Latipova, K.K.Kalanov, and currently the head of the department is E.Kh.Zaitov.
\n   During the years of independence, attention to sociological science has increased. In 1998, as a result of the efforts of Prof. N.S.Alikariev, who was the head of the department at that time, sociology began to be taught to students of all faculties of higher educational institutions and as a compulsory subject in military educational institutions. Thanks to the initiative of Professor N.S.Alikariev and the director of the center for the protection of human rights, academician A.Saidov, in 1997 and under the auspices of the first President I.A.Karimov, the \u00abIjtimoiy Fikr\u00bb <\/strong>Center was opened in Tashkent under the leadership of Academician R.A.Ubaidullaeva and developed and solved social problems from year to year. Since the founding of the \u00abIjtimoiy Fikr\u00bb Center in 1997, the center’s research group became the first in the country to systematically conduct sociological surveys of public opinion. During its more than twenty years of work, the center has conducted more than 650 comprehensive studies based on various methods existing in sociological science. Currently, the Association of Sociologists of Uzbekistan has been created at this center.
\nUnder the guidance of prof. N.S.Alikariev, in 1999 the textbook \u00abGeneral Sociology\u00bb was published in the Uzbek language for the first time in Uzbekistan.
\nIn 1975,<\/strong> the first sociological office was opened in our country at the Department of SOEP (scientific organization of the educational process) of Tashkent State University. In September 1989,<\/strong> the first 50 students of the Uzbek and Russian directions of education were admitted to the Department of Sociology. The first teachers of the department were prof. V.N.Osminin, assoc. prof. R.T.Ubaidullaeva, assoc. prof. Kh. Khaydarov, V.A.Khairulina, I. Dilmurodov, Sh. Kadirova and N.M.Latipova. On the basis of the Center for Sociological Research and the General Methodological Council, the Institute of Higher Education Problems was created. And in the early 90s, a sociological laboratory was created at the department, which widely collaborated. Based on the order of the rector of NUUz No. 01-169 dated August 26, 2009,<\/strong> the educational laboratory of Sociology was restored at the National University of Uzbekistan.
\n    Active work has also been carried out to improve the qualifications of sociologists and the teaching staff of the Department of Sociology of the National University of Uzbekistan. Sociologists created a special program, on the basis of which, under the leadership of Professor N.S.Alikariev, the Department of State and Social Construction of the Higher Pedagogical Institute conducted theoretical and practical training of teachers in this area on the most pressing and modern problems of sociological science. In addition, lectures and roundtable discussions on the social foundations of the national idea and ideology were held for sociologist students. Currently, the teaching staff of the department continues to improve their qualifications at the Main Scientific and Methodological Center under the Ministry of Higher Education, Science and Innovation of the Republic of Uzbekistan.
\nIn general, the development of sociology in Uzbekistan is growing. The first President I.A.Karimov called the process of studying public opinion a barometer of the development of society. This is not accidental, because the study of all social and economic processes in society through public opinion and remembrance by sociological methods is not just a force, but is the driving force of the progress of society. Today, the department has trained 1215 bachelors and more than 100 masters.
