History of the department
The Turkestan People’s Dorilfunun, founded in 1918, was transformed into the Turkestan People’s University in 1920, and then into the Central Asian State University, where world historical sciences were taught at the Faculty of History and Philology. In 1920, the Department of History of Russia operated at this faculty under the direction of A.V. Pankov. Also, academicians V. Bartold and S.A. Zhebelev were invited to create the Departments of History and Culture of the Ancient East and Medieval History of the East. During this period, such historians as V.V. Bartold, A.E. Schmidt, V.V. Bush, S.S. Bezobrazov, L.V. Kholostova-Bezobrazova, V.N. Kun, Gramenitsky, R.F. Kulle, Kuznetsov, A.V. Popov taught on the problems of world history. In the 1930s, world history disciplines were taught at the Department of General History at the Central Asian State University.
With the appointment of Doctor of Historical Sciences, Professor G.A. Khidoyatov to the head of the department in 1961, numerous changes occurred in its scientific life. In the period from 1995-1998, Doctor of Historical Sciences, Professor T.S. Sattarov headed the department of “Modern and Contemporary History.” Since 1998, the department changed its name and received the name “World History.”
The Department of “World History” began its activity under the name of the Department of “New and Latest History” after the reorganization of the Faculty of History in 1935.
Some departments of the faculty, i.e. “History of the Ancient World and Middle Ages”, “History of Eurasia”, “History of Asian and African countries” and “New and Latest History” were united and since 1998 “World (General) History” ” began to be called.
More than 3,000 highly qualified specialists have been trained at the department, more than 20 of them have obtained the degree of doctor of science, more than 180 candidates of science.
Currently, the Department of World History is headed by B.B. Khaynazarov.

Scientific activity
The research work carried out by the department is related to the topic “Current issues of studying and teaching world history,” within the framework of which scientific research is conducted.
In 1998, under the TACIS (TEMPUS) program on the topic of “Central Asia and World History” within the framework of two projects “History” and “Eurasia”, calculated until 2000, a number of professors and teachers improved their qualifications while in France at the University of Rennes, in Great Britain at the University of Exeter, at the Danish Seminary of Frederiksberg and in Germany at the University of Bielefeld . Doctor of Historical Sciences, Professor H.G. Gulyamov and Candidate of Historical Sciences, Associate Professor A. Tatiboev won the international UNESCO grant “Historical Atlas of Karl von Spruner” of the International Institute of Central Asian Studies.
In 2019, under the leadership of the head of the department D. Urakov, the Innovative Grant Competition I-OT-2019-26 was won on the topic: “Creation of a multimedia complex about the contribution of the people of Uzbekistan to the victory over fascism in World War II.” In 2019, a business agreement was signed with JSC State Unitary Enterprise “UZVTORSVETMET.”
Over the years, the department has trained more than 3,000 highly qualified specialists, including over 20 Doctors of Science and more than 180 Candidates of Science. In 2022, D.J. Urakov; in 2023, A.G. Xolliyev, R.N. Tursunov, and S.I. Gabrielyan; in 2024, B.B. Khaynazarov; and in 2025, O. Rajabov successfully defended their doctoral dissertations. As a result, the number of Doctors of Science at the department has reached six to date.

International cooperation
Today, the Department of World History at the National University of Uzbekistan named after Mirzo Ulugbek has established academic cooperation with some of the world’s leading universities, including Bielefeld University (QS Top 1000), University of Exeter (QS World Ranking – 153), Lomonosov Moscow State University (QS World Ranking – 94), M. Auezov South Kazakhstan University (QS World Ranking – 681), University of Göttingen (QS World Ranking – 252), Altai State University (QS World Ranking – 741–750), and L. N. Gumilyov Eurasian National University (QS World Ranking – 321).
Within the framework of these international partnerships, during the 2024–2025 academic year the department actively involved foreign professors and scholars in the educational process. In particular, lecture courses were delivered by Associate Professors Azmukhanova Ayman Maxsutkizina, Martynov Victoria, and Sarsambekova Arna from L. N. Gumilyov Eurasian National University, as well as by professors and lecturers Djanbolatov Sattar Zebergenila, Otarbayeva Guljan Kobeevna, and Narimbet Gulnur Bekmuratqizi from M. Auezov South Kazakhstan University.
In addition, active participation in the department’s academic activities was undertaken by Yuliya Aleksandrovna Lisenko from K. Zhubanov Aktobe Regional University, Professor Kemal Özcan Najmiddin from Necmettin Erbakan University, Bakit Batirbekovich Bayshov from K. Zhubanov Aktobe Regional University, and Gulden Akhmetshine within the framework of the international academic cooperation platform APEMS.
The participation of foreign scholars in the educational process has been steadily increasing each year: 7 foreign specialists were involved during the 2023–2024 academic year, 12 during 2024–2025, and 15 during 2025–2026. Furthermore, on September 25, 2025, Harvard University researcher Harry Shaheen visited the department as part of a scientific internship program and conducted a seminar for students and faculty members entitled “Digital Resources and Source Collections for Historical Research Developed by Harvard Scholars.” In the sphere of international cooperation, researchers from China have also visited the department, where they have been provided with practical academic support by the faculty members.
On June 10, 2021, a joint educational program in the 7M02208 – World History Master’s specialty was established between the National University of Uzbekistan named after Mirzo Ulugbek and M. Auezov South Kazakhstan University. The first graduates of this joint program have already successfully completed their studies.
At the Department of World History, citizens of the People’s Republic of China, Chang Aimei and Chu Beibei, pursued their studies in the specialty 07.00.03 – World History and successfully defended their dissertations for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in History in January 2026.
The department’s professors and lecturers regularly participate in academic lectures and international scientific conferences at leading universities around the world. In particular, D.J. Urakov, A.G. Xolliyev, B. Khaynazarov, S.I. Gabrielyan, Q. Matxoliqov, S.N. Madyarova, and N.A. Vaisova delivered lectures at M. Auezov South Kazakhstan University, while N.A. Vaisova also delivered a 14-hour lecture course at Novosibirsk State University and Lomonosov Moscow State University.
In the area of student academic mobility, during the 2024–2025 academic year the department hosted a total of 43 students from foreign partner universities. Among them were 18 students from M. Auezov South Kazakhstan University, 14 students from Al-Farabi Kazakh National University, and 11 students from Kyrgyz National University. At the same time, two students from the National University of Uzbekistan named after Mirzo Ulugbek were sent to Kyrgyzstan and two students to Kazakhstan within the framework of academic exchange programs.
