March 22 – Mirzo Ulugbek’s birthday

Today, on the occasion of the 631st anniversary of the birth of the great astronomer and mathematician, ruler of the Timurid state, statesman Mirzo Ulugbek, a solemn event titled “Ulugbek’s Treasure” was held at the foot of the monument in the Mirzo Ulugbek district of our capital.

The event was opened by the President of the Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Uzbekistan Shavkat Ayupov and the Deputy Minister of Higher Education, Science and Innovation Otabek Makhkamov.

The team of the National University of Uzbekistan named after Mirzo Ulugbek took part in the event and laid flowers at the foot of the monument to the scientist.

60 of our young people participated in the event as successors of Mirzo Ulugbek. Young people who are steadfastly moving towards becoming worthy heirs to the scientific heritage of our great ancestor Mirzo Ulugbek spoke to the attendees about their scientific and innovative projects in various fields and their achievements.

The event concluded with the laying of flowers at the foot of the monument to Mirzo Ulugbek.

Mirzo Ulugbek was one of the great scholars of his time, and his great contribution to science was manifested through the Samarkand Observatory and the work “Zij-i Kuragani.” He determined the coordinates of 1018 stars before the development of European science, calculating the duration of the year as 365 days 6 hours 10 minutes 8 seconds, making a mistake of only 25 seconds. Observations conducted at his observatory made a huge contribution to the development of astronomy throughout the world.
