Research Department of Applied Ecology and Sustainable Development

National University of Uzbekistan named after Mirzo Ulugbek   In 1991, by decision of the Academic Council of Tashkent State University, the Research Department of Applied Ecology and Environmental Management, abbreviated name NIOPE and RP, was organized (order 01-67 of 03/01/1991). In 2014, it was renamed the Research Department of Applied Ecology and Sustainable Development at NUUz.  (order No. 01-236 dated July 2, 2014). Head of the department – Azizov Azamat, PhD. Traditionally, the department’s activities have been related to ecology, environmental protection and environmental education. Main directions of scientific research:
  • environmental monitoring;
  • climate change problems;
  • urban ecology, the influence of the urban environment on urban vegetation;
  • integration of sustainable development goals into the education and training system (ESD);
  • solid-phase methanogenesis of organic waste (biogas production);
  • photosynthesis and adaptation of plants to abiotic environmental factors;
  • agroforestry as a technology for restoring degraded landscapes; salt and drought tolerance of plants;
  • allergenic city plants, pollen allergy;
  • technologies for treating city wastewater.
  The department has good experience in:
  • studying of soils, water and plants;
  • the development of educational materials, including the creation of electronic training programs;
  • conducting trainings on sustainable development, adaptation to climate change, sustainable management of natural resources, ESD, modern pedagogical technologies, environmental monitoring.
A training center for Education for Sustainable Development has been created within the department. The center is equipped with office equipment for conducting trainings and seminars. Currently, the department is implementing 2 research projects:
  1. Development of methodological foundations for a system of aeropalynological monitoring of the urban environment in various climatic zones (using the example of Tashkent and Minsk), IL-4821091350, 2023-2024
  2. Development of technology for landscape restoration and conservation of arid ecosystems of the Amudarya delta (Karakalpakstan) using agroforestry methods, IL-492104180, 2023-2025
The department has 17 employees (of which 13 are part-time, including 3 doctoral students, 2 master’s students, 1 bachelor’sstudent).
