Since Uzbekistan is one of the centers of the origin of science of astronomy, it is in our University for the first time in Central Asia was opened the educational direction of astronomy (1981). Since then, each year, on the basis of continuous study of the needs of scientific personnel, 15-25 students are admitted separately from the 1st course. Students study according to the curriculum, which is almost identical to the curriculum of the specialty astronomy", operating in Moscow and St. Petersburg universities (Russia). The department was opened in 1987 thanks to the activities and efforts of Professor S.N.Nuritdinov, and at the same time in the educational process were actively involved leading professors of the above-stated universities and some heads of departments of the Astronomical Institute of the Academy of Sciences of Uzbekistan.
In 2012, the Department of Astronomy and astrophysics was combined with the group of atmosphere physics of the inter-faculty Department of General physics and became known as the Department of Astronomy and atmospheric physics and is still active.

Now the number of courses carried out in the Department for more than 40. The Department trains bachelors and masters in the field of astronomy, as well as specialists with a master‘s degree in meteorology.  After completing their studies at the University the gifted students can continue their education in the framework of basic doctoral studies in order to prepare a thesis of PhD (and then a DSci).
The Department conducts research of physics, evolution, mechanisms of formation and observational aspects of a number of unique objects of modern astrophysics, as well as the physics of climate change in selected regions of Central Asia and Uzbekistan. Thanks to the activities and energy of the head of the Department Professor S.N.Nuritdinov the scientific laboratory of Astrophysical researches at the physical faculty was established. Under his leadership, 12 PhD and DSci were prepared, the scientific school Nonlinear astrophysics and cosmogony was formed. At the Department are constantly fundamental and applied research projects.
