Control of optical characteristics of oxide and fluoride crystals activated by rare earth elements using a magnetic field.

Expected Results and their Significance:
The fundamental goal of the presented project is the experimental measurements and theoretical studies of paramagnetic crystals of garnets and fluorides doped with trivalent rare earth ions, whose tasks include the study of Stark sublevels (including their symmetric identification and the construction of wave functions) of excited high-energy multiplets of the basic 4f(n)-configuration of the trivalent RE terbium ion in these structures. The applied aspect of the project consists in the experimental study of such Stark sublevels of RE Tb3+ ions in crystals of garnets and fluorides, the "mixing" of states of which by an external magnetic field will lead to the appearance of opto-magnetic effects and magneto-optical effects suitable for their use in the creation of magnetically controlled optical devices.
Important results obtained during the reporting period:
The analysis of the problem was carried out on the basis of new data from scientific sources. Samples of fluoride single crystals activated by trivalent terbium ions were prepared for optical and magneto-optical studies. X-ray orientation and optical grinding of the studied samples were carried out. Magneto-optical spectra of fluoride crystals into which terbium ions were introduced were preliminarily measured using the Faraday effect.
