History of the department
The Department of “Archival Studies and Source Studies” was established in 1991 within the Faculty of History and was originally called the Department of “Source Studies, Archival Studies and Museum Studies”. From October 2024, it was renamed as “Archival studies and source studies”.
During the past years, professors N.A., one of the famous historians of our republic, have worked at the department. Abdurahimova, Z.U. Choriyev, Sh.H. Vahidov, Sh.M. Oljayeva, Sh.S. Kamaliddinov, A. Boriyev, S.B. Shodmonova, associate professors O.M. Tashmukhamedov, G.V. Dmitriyev, F.R. Ergashev, Y. Kadirova have been working for many years.
Currently, professors and teachers of the department are carrying out a number of works on the development of the field of source studies and archival studies in Uzbekistan. In particular, students of the history department are offered Source studies and historiography, Historical geography, Old Uzbek writing, Museum studies and archival studies; history of state institutions in Uzbekistan, history of archival work in Uzbekistan, digital archives, audiovisual documents as sources, intellectual heritage of Central Asian scholars, methodology of reading texts in Eastern languages, schools of history in Central Asian khanates Lectures are given and scientific research works are also conducted. In the last three years, 3 professors and teachers of the department received a Doctor of Science (DSc), 5 received a PhD, and 2 received the title of professor, the scientific potential of the department increased by 60% in the 2024-2025 academic year:
- “Historical toponymy of the city of Tashkent” (X. Buriyeva),
- “Socio-economic history of Uzbekistan in documents of UzMA” (Sh. Choriyev),
- “Urban planning and architecture during the Timurid period” (M. Hamidova),
- “Development of historical-geographical and cartographic knowledge of Central Asia in Western Europe and Russia (XVI-XX centuries)” (Z. Saidboboev),
- “History of the electric power industry of Uzbekistan (1924-1991)” (G. Saidbobayeva),
- The monographs “History of the tax policy of the Soviet state in Uzbekistan (1945 – 1991)” (R. Duschanov),
- “Documents of funds of Turkestan scientific societies in the National Archives of Uzbekistan” (A. Nazarov)
were published. In 2020-2024, the department achieved effective results in terms of the number of scientific articles in international journals. In particular, the teachers of the department publish articles in scientific publications included in Scopus, Web of Sciences, EBSCO, SOBIAD, Rins, and specialized international databases. The head of the department, Ph.D. prof. Z.B.Rakhmonkulova and Doctor of History (DSc), Associate Professor Sh.Sh. Choriyevlar are editorial members of the magazine “bilgi ve belge araştirmalari dergisi” of Istanbul University of the Republic of Turkey (QS-620). The department traditionally holds a republican, international scientific-practical conference on the topic “Problems of historical source studies”every two years.
In 2023, the department implemented a practical project entitled “Digital archive: creation of an online guide to the funds of the National Archive of Uzbekistan” under the number AL-442105887. As part of this project, the guides archive.uz platform is working 24/7. Also, a training room was established as part of the project. In carrying out the educational and scientific process, the department has established cooperation with the “Ozarkhiv” agency, the Institute of Oriental Studies of the Academy of Sciences, and the museums of the republic
International cooperation
Local and foreign partners:
In 2000-2010, the professors of the department were:

- Sh. Rakhmonkulova (England, Turkey),
- H. Boriyeva (Kazakhstan),
- M. Hamidova (Russia)
with their lectures at international conferences attended. In 2010-2020, a number of teachers of the department completed internships. In particular, Sh. Choriyev in India in 2016, Latvia in 2018 (in the top 267). In 2020, he did an internship at Liepaja University, and in 2022 at Turkey’s Istanbul University (QS ranked 621). During this internship, cooperation was established with Mimar Sinan University. In 2017, G.Saidbobayeva went to India, Z.Saidbobayev went to the USA in 2006, and in 2022, he returned to Tartu University in Estonia. In 2024, Z. Rahmonkulova, Sh. Choriyev, Z. Saidbobayev, G. Saidbobayeva returned from an internship in Turkey. In these years, as a result of the efforts of professors and teachers of the department, memorandums of cooperation were signed with Mimar Sinan and Inonu universities. In 2023-2024, an agreement was signed with Turkey’s Marmara and Inonu universities on the KA131 / KA 171 direction of the Erasmus+ project. As a result, within the framework of the project, professors and teachers of the department were on internship at Inonu University.
In addition, between the Department of “Source Studies and Archival Studies” and the Department of “Information and Archival Studies” of Istanbul University, the exchange of educational-methodical and scientific works on the development of the curriculum of the Bachelor of Archival Studies, preparation of educational literature is also launched. In 2024, Z.B. Rakhmonkulova, Sh.Sh. Choriyev, R.R. Duschanov, G.SH. Shaidullayeva, A.Y. The Nazarovs came to give a lecture at Istanbul University.
Taking into account the above-mentioned cooperation relations, the professors of the Department of “Source Studies and Archival Studies” of the Faculty of History of the National University of Uzbekistan, prof. person in the academic year 2020-2021, 7 in 2021-2022, 7 in 2022-2023, 15 in 2023-2024 attracted to study. 10 of the foreign experts involved in the teaching process are professors of foreign HEIs, such as Al-Farabi Kazakhstan National University, Tomsk State University, Istanbul University, Russian State Humanities University, Marmara, Inonu University, which are among the top 1000 according to the QS rating.
