In order to further develop Taekwondo (WT) in the Republic of Uzbekistan and to improve the system of training highly skilled athletes and personnel, Resolution of the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan of November 16, 2017, No. 3390 “On the Establishment of the Faculty of ‘Taekwondo and Sports Activities’ within the National University of Uzbekistan named after Mirzo Ulugbek” was adopted.
In accordance with this resolution, in 2018 the Department of “Taekwondo and Sports Activities” was established under the faculty (5610518 – Sports Activities: Taekwondo (WT)). The department currently offers the bachelor’s degree programs 61010300 – “Sports Activities (by type of activity)”: Sports Activities (Taekwondo (WT)), Sports Activities (Rugby), Sports Activities (Kurash), Sports Activities (Judo) and Sports Activities (Freestyle Wrestling), as well as the master’s degree program 71010201 – “Sports Activities (Taekwondo (WT))”.
The main goals and objectives of the department: training in the “Sports Activities (by type of activity)” degree programs, covering the methodology of theoretical and practical teaching and the history of the development of Taekwondo (WT), Rugby, Kurash, Judo and Freestyle Wrestling; training highly qualified personnel capable of applying modern pedagogical and information and communication technologies in the educational process; improving the personnel training system by drawing on advanced international experience and involving highly qualified foreign and domestic practitioners and coaches in the educational process; educating highly qualified coaches, teachers and talented students; training professional athletes who possess solid knowledge in the field of sports and are capable of competing successfully in international competitions; and preparing talented athletes for the national team of Uzbekistan.
The department has developed modern curricula and teaching methods aimed at training highly qualified coach-teachers, selecting talented young athletes and developing the skills and knowledge of professional athletes capable of competing successfully in international sports competitions.
To further strengthen students’ knowledge and skills in the department’s sports activity programs (Taekwondo (WT), Rugby, Kurash, Judo and Freestyle Wrestling), full and effective use of the university’s sports facilities has been established.
The Department of “Taekwondo and Sports Activities” is provided with scientific and methodological resources in the field of physical education and sport for teaching and training qualified specialists. On average, each academic year the department publishes 12 articles in Scopus-indexed journals, more than 60 articles in scientific journals recommended by the Higher Attestation Commission (HAC), about 30 international and national conference abstracts, more than 18 textbooks and study guides, and 4 monographs, creating a solid foundation for students’ learning.
Publications by the teaching staff of the Department of “Taekwondo and Sports Activities”
The department has established mutually beneficial cooperation with foreign universities ranked in the prestigious TOP-1000. In particular, promising memoranda and agreements have been signed and direct partnerships established with Dankook and Yongin universities (Republic of Korea), China’s Tianjin University of Sport, Beijing Normal University and Renmin University of China, the Polish “International Martial Arts” Association, the Mukhtar Auezov South Kazakhstan University, the World Taekwondo Development Foundation, and the leadership of the World and Asian Rugby federations.
Students train regularly at the university sports complex to improve their athletic skills. Our students include 4 Olympic and Paralympic champions and medalists, 17 World Championship winners and medalists, 29 Asian Championship winners and medalists, and more than 200 winners and medalists of prestigious international competitions and national championships.
As a result, Ulugbek Rashitov became a two-time Olympic champion, winning gold medals, while at the Olympic Games Zukhriddin Tokhirov won a gold medal, Svetlana Osipova a silver medal, and Ziyoda Isakova a bronze medal.
