The Department of Foreign Languages and Literature was established as an independent department on 7 October 2020 on the basis of the Department of Comparative Linguistics and Translation Theory, in accordance with Resolution No. 2 adopted at the meeting of the Council of the National University on 16 September 2020.
The Head of the Department is Khurshid Abdimalikovich Sarimsokov, who was awarded the academic degree of Doctor of Philological Sciences by the Higher Attestation Commission of the Republic of Uzbekistan on 12 February 2024. He has been serving as the Head of the Department since 2023.
The Department conducts its educational, pedagogical, and research activities effectively in accordance with its annual academic plans. It is committed to ensuring high-quality education, fostering students’ academic and professional development, and promoting research in the fields of linguistics, translation studies, and literary studies.
Currently, 36 faculty members work at the Department, including 1 Doctor of Sciences, 9 Candidates of Sciences, 1 Professor, 7 Associate Professors, 2 Senior Lecturers, as well as Lecturers and Trainee Lecturers. The faculty members actively engage in teaching, research, professional development, and international academic cooperation.
Faculty members and students of the Department actively participate in educational programmes, professional development initiatives, academic exchange programmes, and international research projects in Japan, Belgium, France, the United Kingdom, Spain, Russia, Türkiye, Malaysia, and the United States within the framework of international cooperation programmes.
Currently, more than 1,000 students are studying at the Department. The majority of students demonstrate B2 or C1 levels of foreign language proficiency in accordance with the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).
The Department annually organizes international and national scientific and practical conferences on the theme “Current Issues in Modern Linguistics: Linguoculturology, Translation Studies, and Comparative Literary Studies.” These conferences provide a platform for scholars, researchers, lecturers, and students to exchange academic knowledge, discuss current issues, and present the results of their research.
The Department’s students actively participate in national and international scientific conferences, seminars, and academic events. Through their research activities, they make valuable contributions to the development of modern linguistics, translation studies, linguoculturology, and comparative literary studies.
