Evaluation of effect of dams and climate change on water scarcity and drought in arid and semi-arid river basins of India and Uzbekistan.

Scientific head: Rakhmonov Kamiljon Radjabovich
Expiration date: 04.01.2021-31.12.2023

Project type: practical

Expected results and their significance: Assessment of meteorological, hydrological drought and aspects of water shortage on the Chirchik (Uzbekistan) and Tapi (India) rivers caused by natural conditions for a certain period and indicators of the drought index under the influence of the Charvak (Uzbekistan) and Ukai (India) dams. Determination of the main characteristics of meteorological drought in the basins of the Chirchik and Tapi rivers, its forecasting and assessment under various temporal climatic scenarios using drought indices. Statistical assessment of the impact of climate change on meteorological and hydrological drought, study of interannual fluctuations in meteorological drought, description of meteorological drought based on data from Piskom and Yangiyul meteorological stations. Estimation of meteorological and hydrological drought indices, statistical evaluation of relationships between them, determination of the Pearson and Spearman rank correlation coefficient, determination of the "Hit-score" drought index, evaluation of relationships between meteorological and hydrological drought indices using time-lag analysis.

Important results achieved during the reporting period (at the end of the project): The hydrological and meteorological data of observations in the Chirchik river basin were summarized and initially processed. Appropriate drought indicators were selected to describe meteorological and hydrological drought on the Chirchik River. The change in the annual and seasonal variability of the runoff of the Chirchik River was estimated. The meteorological and hydrological drought indices (SPI, SSI, Run theory) were described and determined. Correlations between meteorological and hydrological drought indices were determined. Hit-score indices were determined with different provision of meteorological and hydrological drought indices. The relationship between meteorological and hydrological indicators of drought was assessed by time lag analysis.
